If you follow my instagram account you might have noticed that I recently moved from London to Munich. I’ve moved cities 5 times in the last 10 years, and it has always been tough and challenging. Even worse, I had to change my fitness routine because all my favorite classes and running routes were no longer available. But I’ve also learned a lot on how to stay fit while moving and want to share that for you.
1) Moving is equal to a workout
Technically it involves a lot of forward bends (putting things into boxes), deadlifts (lifting boxes), heavy carries (carrying boxes), squats (putting things out of boxes), shoulder presses (putting things into new cupboards) etc.
Make sure to move with good form to avoid injuries. Also try to use your stronger muscles to lift and carry. For example when picking up a box try to squat down and use your legs instead of lifting it with straight legs and the force of your lower back.
It is absolutely normal to feel tired after the move. Get some rest. After all, it is a workout.
2) Make use of the hotel gym to keep your fitness routine
I once had to stay at a hotel for two weeks because my flat was not ready yet. The hotel I stayed in had a pool and a gym. It was a complete fitness heaven for me. I made sure I used it every day to get a fitness routine and also to make up for the extra calories I ate for breakfast.
3) go for a neighborhood walk
Go and check out your new neighborhood by walking in zig-zags around your house. You want to know where the next supermarket, pharmacy and bakery is. You might also find a cool gym, an organic farmers market or yoga-studio along the way.
4) Join the local running club
A local running club is a great way to meet new people and discover your new city. When I moved to London I first joined the Chelsea Running Club, where I also met most of my best friends. (even though I ended up living in a completely different area).
I also joined the Adidas Runners in London and Munich. They have various locations all over the world, maybe also in your city.
And if there is no running club in your new town, create one.
5) Try all the gyms for free
Usually gyms or studios will offer everyone a cheap or even free first trial session. This is a great way to explore your new city and get fit at the same time.
If you happen to live in a bigger city ClassPass or similar providers have really cheap introductory offers to try out new classes for a fraction of the regular price.
6) Work out at home
If you happen to move somewhere where there is no running club, no gym, no yoga studio, … Congratulations! you have definitely moved to the end of the world.
